Through our club services, we are passionately devoted to helping make the world a better place. This can range from youth-related projects, helping disadvantaged youngsters, to caring for the elderly and brightening their lives wherever we can. The Club has remained constantly active in Community Service. One of its greatest achievements over the years was the building of the Victoria Park School for the Deaf, a project which cost over HK$250,000.
Other notable achievements include the building of a Youth Club at Mansion Street, North Point, purchasing a mobile medical van for the Medical and Health Services of the Hong Kong Government, a library and study centre called the Star of the Sea Study Centre in Chai Wan Resettlement Estate, and a dental clinic for underprivileged people in Chai Wan and St. James Settlement, Wanchai.
Today we look to drive sustainable projects which serve all aspects of the community. Here are a few from recent years:
Swimming Above Self
Another RCHKIE initiative, the project provides financial subsidies and moral support to around 60 financially inadequate and mildly handicapped pupils who attend Choi Jun school. Participants were trained by professional swimming coaches weekly to boost their physical strength and self confidence. Several students went on to represent Hong Kong in the Paralympics, including one Gold medallist.
Also with Choi Jun school, we arrange special lunches to get together with their pupils. We take them to lunch and enjoy some chatter over food. It brightens their day…and ours too.
Rookie Stars Dance Contest
Since 2011, we initiated a hip hop dance competition among primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong, in partnership with Youth Outreach. Starting with about 200 participants in the first event, today over 600 talented youngsters get on stage every year and show what they can do to the funky beats.
